One of the questions I am asked most often is what actually happens at a first consultation. People are frequently more nervous about the appointment itself than about anything that might follow it, so I think it helps to set out plainly what the visit involves.
Before you come in
You will need a referral from your GP. This applies to every patient I see, including those considering purely cosmetic procedures where no Medicare rebate is available. A referral means your GP knows what you are considering, and it gives me a fuller picture of your general health before we begin.
What we talk about
The first part of a consultation is mostly listening. I want to understand what has brought you in, what is bothering you, and what you are hoping might change. There is no right or wrong answer here, and no pressure to have your thoughts perfectly ordered.
We will then discuss your medical history, medications, previous surgery, smoking status and any other health matters that could affect your suitability or your healing. Some of these questions are detailed, but each one has a reason behind it.
Examination and assessment
Where relevant, I will carry out a clinical examination. This is done privately and respectfully, and a chaperone can be present if you would prefer. If clinical photography is appropriate, it is only ever taken with your consent and handled according to our photography policy.
Discussing options honestly
I will explain which options may be reasonable for you, what each one involves, and what the realistic limitations are. Just as importantly, I will tell you if I do not think surgery is the right choice, or if the outcome you are hoping for is unlikely to be achievable. That conversation is part of my responsibility as your surgeon.
Every person is different. Anatomy, health, healing and expectations all vary, so what is suitable for one patient may not be suitable for another.
You do not decide on the day
No procedure is booked or performed at a first consultation. If you decide you would like to proceed, there is a second consultation, and a cooling-off period of at least seven days applies after that before any cosmetic surgery. This is deliberate. Time to think is part of good care, not an obstacle to it.
Bring your questions
Please write things down beforehand and bring the list with you. There is no such thing as a question that is too small, and you are very welcome to bring a support person with you.
