Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Therapeutic Massage Technique

A gentle, rhythmic massage technique to support lymphatic drainage, reduce fluid retention, and aid post-surgical recovery.

Manual lymphatic drainage treatment at Evolve Skin Clinic
OVERVIEW

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual lymphatic drainage is a gentle, rhythmic massage technique designed to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid through the body's natural drainage pathways, helping to reduce swelling and fluid retention. It is frequently used to support recovery following surgical procedures, as well as for general puffiness, congestion or fluid retention unrelated to surgery.

THE PROCESS

What's involved

What to expect

Using light, rhythmic strokes, the therapist works over the treatment area to encourage lymphatic flow. Unlike deep tissue massage, the pressure used is very light. A session typically takes 30–60 minutes depending on the area being treated.

Recovery

There is no downtime, and many people find the treatment relaxing. If used post-surgically, sessions are scheduled as part of your recovery plan in consultation with Dr. Anavekar.

BENEFITS

Potential benefits

This treatment may:

  • May reduce swelling and fluid retention
  • Can support recovery and comfort following surgical procedures
  • Generally relaxing, with no downtime

Outcomes vary between individuals and cannot be guaranteed.

RISKS

Risks and complications

All treatments carry some risk, even non-surgical ones. Key risks include:

  • Temporary lightheadedness or fatigue following treatment — an uncommon but recognised response
  • Not suitable for certain medical conditions, including active infection, some cardiac or kidney conditions, or active blood clots
  • Not a substitute for medical assessment — significant or sudden swelling should be assessed by a doctor rather than treated with massage alone

This is a summary, not a complete list. Always disclose your full medical history before treatment, including any heart, kidney or circulatory conditions. This treatment is not appropriate for everyone and is assessed on an individual basis. Please raise any concerns with our clinical team directly.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as a regular massage?

No. Manual lymphatic drainage uses much lighter pressure and a specific rhythmic technique aimed at the lymphatic system, rather than muscle tissue.

When after surgery can I start this?

Timing depends on your specific procedure and recovery. Dr. Anavekar will advise on an appropriate schedule as part of your post-operative care.

Can I have this if I'm not a surgical patient?

Yes. It's also used for general fluid retention and puffiness unrelated to surgery, subject to the same medical suitability assessment.
