Dr. Namrata Anavekar is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and a specialist plastic and reconstructive surgeon, consulting from Bulleen and Sunbury.

Her practice covers breast surgery, body contouring, facial surgery, hand surgery and skin cancer reconstruction — spanning both cosmetic and reconstructive work. THE PATHWAY

What to expect

01 REFERRAL

A referral from your GP or another specialist is required before cosmetic surgery in Australia, and allows a Medicare rebate on consultations for reconstructive conditions.

02 CONSULTATION

Examination, discussion of your goals and medical history, and an honest assessment of whether surgery is appropriate. Photographs are usually taken for planning.

03 COOLING-OFF

For cosmetic surgery, a minimum seven-day cooling-off period applies between your initial consultation and any booking, in accordance with AHPRA guidelines.

04 SURGERY

Performed in an accredited facility, with a specialist anaesthetist where general anaesthesia is used.

05 FOLLOW-UP

Scheduled reviews to monitor healing and recovery, with guidance on activity, garments and scar care.

Screening and consent. Dr. Anavekar screens all cosmetic surgery patients for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), as required under the AHPRA guidelines. You will receive written information about risks, costs and recovery, and provide informed financial and surgical consent before proceeding.

COSTS

Fees, Medicare and health funds

Surgery performed for purely cosmetic reasons does not attract a Medicare rebate, and private health insurance does not generally contribute.

Where surgery is reconstructive, or addresses a documented functional problem, a Medicare item number may apply — this is common with breast reduction, abdominoplasty involving significant muscle separation, functional rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery where vision is obstructed, hand surgery and skin cancer treatment. Eligibility criteria are specific and assessed individually.
