OVERVIEW

What is SkinPen Micro Needling?

SkinPen uses fine, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin's surface, triggering the body's natural wound-healing response and stimulating collagen and elastin production. It is used to treat acne scarring, fine lines, enlarged pores and general skin texture, and is generally well-tolerated across a wider range of skin types than many laser treatments.

THE PROCESS

What's involved

What to expect

A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment to improve comfort. The SkinPen device is passed over the treatment area, creating thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. A session typically takes 30–45 minutes depending on the area treated.

Recovery

Your skin will look and feel similar to mild sunburn for 1–3 days, with some redness and sensitivity. Makeup is generally avoided for 24 hours. Most people are comfortable returning to normal activities the following day.

BENEFITS

Potential benefits

This treatment may:

  • May improve the appearance of acne scarring and fine lines
  • Can refine skin texture and the appearance of enlarged pores
  • Minimal downtime compared with laser resurfacing treatments
  • Generally suitable across a wide range of skin types, including those where laser carries more risk

Outcomes vary between individuals and cannot be guaranteed.

RISKS

Risks and complications

All treatments carry some risk, even non-surgical ones. Key risks include:

  • Temporary redness and sensitivity, similar to mild sunburn, lasting 1–3 days
  • Pinpoint bleeding during the treatment itself
  • Infection — an uncommon risk if aftercare instructions are not followed
  • Not suitable for those with active acne, active skin infections, or certain blood-thinning medications
  • Gradual results — a course of treatments is generally needed to see a meaningful change

This is a summary, not a complete list. Let your clinician know about any skin conditions, medications or recent treatments before your session, as these can affect suitability and healing. Please raise any concerns with our clinical team directly.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a facial?

Micro needling creates controlled micro-injuries to stimulate deeper collagen production — a more active treatment than a facial, with more noticeable downtime and results.

How many sessions will I need?

A course of 3–6 sessions is often recommended for scarring or texture concerns, spaced 4–6 weeks apart.

Can I have this if I have darker skin?

Micro needling is generally considered lower-risk for pigmentation changes than many laser treatments, making it a reasonable option across a wide range of skin tones — this is confirmed at consultation.
