Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions we're asked most often, from your first consultation through to recovery. For a deeper look at any topic, our dedicated pages linked throughout cover things in more detail.
Before you visit
Do I need a referral to see Dr. Anavekar?
A referral from your GP is required for procedures that may attract a Medicare rebate. For purely cosmetic consultations, a referral is not always required, but current Australian regulations do require a referral from a GP or specialist for cosmetic surgery specifically. Our team can confirm what applies to your situation when you get in touch.
What happens at my first consultation?
Your consultation is a chance to discuss your goals, have a thorough examination, and get honest advice on what's realistic for you. Dr. Anavekar will walk you through your options, including whether surgery or a non-surgical skin treatment is more appropriate. See our blog post on what to expect at your first consultation for a full walkthrough.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Your referral letter (if applicable), Medicare card, private health insurance details, a list of current medications and supplements, and any relevant previous scans or specialist reports. If you're unsure what's relevant, bring it along and our team can advise.
Is there a cooling-off period for cosmetic surgery?
Yes. Current regulations require a mandatory cooling-off period between your consultation and cosmetic surgery, giving you time to reflect before proceeding. We see this as a valuable part of making a considered decision, not a hurdle. Read more on our blog: Why There Is a Cooling-Off Period Before Cosmetic Surgery.
Do you offer telehealth consultations?
For some follow-up appointments, a telehealth consultation may be appropriate. Your initial consultation for a surgical assessment will generally need to be in person. Contact our team to discuss what's suitable for your circumstances.
Costs and cover
How much does surgery cost?
Costs vary by procedure and individual circumstances, and are only confirmed after your consultation. Our Surgery Costs page explains what's typically included — surgeon's fee, anaesthetist's fee, hospital fees and more — and why quotes differ between patients.
Will Medicare or my health fund cover my procedure?
This depends entirely on whether your procedure is classified as cosmetic or reconstructive. Reconstructive procedures may attract a Medicare rebate and health fund contribution; cosmetic procedures do not. See Medicare and Health Funds for a full explanation.
What are my options if I need help funding my surgery?
Some patients look into medical financing options as part of their planning. We'd always recommend seeking independent financial advice before committing. See Funding Your Surgery for more.
What if I need to reschedule or cancel my appointment?
We understand plans change. Please contact our team as early as possible if you need to reschedule or cancel — we'll talk you through what applies to your specific booking.
Preparing and recovering
How do I prepare for surgery?
Preparation covers medical clearance, medication review, arranging support at home, and fasting instructions. Our Preparing for Surgery page covers everything you need to organise beforehand.
What does recovery actually involve?
Recovery varies by procedure, but generally involves an initial period of rest and wound care, followed by a gradual return to normal activity. Our Post Surgery page walks through what to expect in the first few days and beyond.
How do I look after my scar?
Good scar care starts with protecting the wound and continues for months afterwards. See our Wound and Scar Care page for guidance, including scar support products available through our shop.
What if I'm not happy with my results?
We take the time upfront to set realistic expectations, but if you have concerns about your results, please talk to us. Every situation is different, and Dr. Anavekar will discuss the appropriate path forward with you directly.
What should I do if something feels wrong after surgery?
Contact us if you notice increasing pain, fever, spreading redness, unusual discharge, or anything that simply feels wrong. Instructions for contacting Dr. Anavekar after hours are included in your surgery paperwork. For serious concerns, always attend your nearest Emergency Department.
Non-surgical treatments
Can I have skin treatments instead of surgery?
Sometimes. Skin ageing and surgical ageing are different problems — skin treatments improve quality and texture, but don't lift descended tissue. For some patients, skin treatment is the right step instead of surgery; for others, alongside it. We'll give you an honest opinion based on your goals.
Who administers injectable treatments?
Injectable treatments are only administered by Dr. Anavekar, to maintain the highest level of patient safety and care. All other skin treatments are delivered by our fully qualified and experienced Dermal Clinician.
Where is the Skin Clinic located?
Our Skin Clinic operates only from our Bulleen location. Dr Anavekar also sees surgical patients in Sunbury, but skin clinic treatments are available at Bulleen only.
