OVERVIEW

Preparing for surgery

Preparing well in the weeks before surgery gives you the best foundation for a smooth recovery. This page sets out the key things to think about — Dr. Anavekar will also give you instructions specific to your procedure.

HEALTH

Medical clearance and health optimisation

Your general health is reviewed before surgery. Blood pressure, any chronic conditions such as diabetes, and current medications are all taken into account. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, your GP or specialist may need to provide clearance beforehand.

SMOKING

Smoking

You must cease smoking well before surgery — for most procedures, at least 6 weeks beforehand and 6 weeks afterwards. Smoking significantly increases the risk of complications, including wound healing problems and tissue loss. If you’d like help stopping, your GP can assist, and Quitline is available on 13 7848.

MEDICATIONS

Medications and supplements

Bring a complete list of everything you take, including anything bought without a prescription. Certain medications — particularly blood thinners — need careful planning around surgery, and several common supplements (including fish oil and vitamin E) can affect bleeding. Never stop a prescribed medication on your own initiative; you will be given specific instructions.

AT HOME

Arranging support at home

Organise someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least the first night. Depending on your procedure, you may need help with children, pets, driving or daily tasks for longer than that.

PRACTICAL ARRANGEMENTS

Practical arrangements

  • Arrange time off work — allow more than you think you’ll need
  • Prepare meals in advance and have loose, comfortable clothing ready
  • Fill any prescriptions beforehand, not after
  • Set up pillows and anything you’ll need within easy reach at home
FASTING

Fasting instructions

You’ll be given specific fasting instructions before your procedure in your surgery paperwork. These must be followed exactly — eating or drinking outside them is a genuine anaesthetic risk and will usually mean your surgery is postponed.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Bring your questions

Write down anything you’re unsure about and bring the list to your consultation. No question is too small.

This page is general information only and does not replace instructions given to you directly by Dr. Anavekar or the clinical team.
